I can speak from “insider” knowledge that side projects are absolutely taken into account with hiring. In a small regard, they are evaluated for code quality, tech experience, and other “hard” skills, but much more than this, they’re considered to demonstrate a candidate’s passion. I’ve raised concerns about this for the reasons I cited already, but you’re point about it undermining the intrinsic value of it as an indicator is astute.
